Broke both femurs. I am also a T-12 Paraplegic from a snowmobile accident in 1987.
When did this injury occur?
Sat. Sept 10, 2011
How long was the recovery process?
17 days
What provided you the motivation and drive to press on through the difficult times after sustaining the injury?
My faith in God, my family, & support from my friends. Dr. Heddings explained my situation and said that I would be OK. He made me feel like I was going to be fine and eased my mind about returning to normal activities. My attitude was pretty bad at first but after constant prayer, I got a new perspective about my situation.
How did the injury you sustained shape your character in who you are today?
It has made me a stronger, more focused person. I do things differently and intentionally. The injury scared both me and my wife but that fear was irrational. Once I began to heal and recover I rebuilt and got stronger both mentally and physically. Sometimes setbacks are just speed bumps to let us know that life is precious. Life is worth living even if you obtain a disability from an injury. I am alive and doing great and living. My kids like me (sometimes) and my wife says I inspire her. I don’t need everyone to like me just the ones around me!
Since the injury, how has life changed for you?
Well, I got more focused on things I shouldn’t do. I practice more intentionally and workout more regularly. I look at things from a different perspective. I don’t think it’s a bad perspective but If I had my choice I would rather my injury not happen to me. We don’t have choices when an injury happens to change our life. We can either make the most of it or we can fight it and complain about the things we use to do. You must change your attitude and be willing to have peace with the new you. Pray, get educated then get over yourself and live a happy life.
